Robert Shurtleff, DVM
Dr. Bob Shurtleff grew up in Cochituate, Massachusetts and graduated from Boston College in 1971. He waited for five years for Tufts to start a veterinary school in New England before giving up and moving to the Pacific Northwest. Three more years of classes and a second Bachelor's degree led to Washington State University Dr. College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation in 1983, he returned to New England and worked at Boston Road Animal Hospital before starting his own practice in 1989. The last 30 years have been spent at Eastfield Hospital for Animals. His interests are varied, but soft-tissue surgery and ophthalmology are favorites for him.
His love of animals led him to work with many humane organizations and rescue groups, including the original Homeless Cat Project in Springfield, the Westfield Homeless Cat Project, Faces dog rescue, and many others. His sense of community service led to his work as President of the Western Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association and for over a decade as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association and current liaison to the State Board of Registration in Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Bob and his wife, Theresa, share their home with one Chihuahua, a German Shepherd, and five cats (all rescues), as well as seven grandchildren with their parents (not rescued, just lucky).
